A Little Hanalei History

Our plantation cottage was first built in the 1860’s...

by Ho Pak Yet and his wife [name unavailable], who as teenage newlyweds sailed from China to work on Hawaiian plantations.  Later they prospered as

sandalwood traders with their own ship.  They settled in Hanalei to grow rice and raise their five children (descendants still live nearby). They built this

house and another, plus a few structures that took on varying identities: coffee shop, saloon, bakery, tailor shop, general store, and mah-jongg casino.

A century later, this lone surviving cottage was turned into the Hanalei Museum.    But age took its toll…and 1992’s powerful Hurricane Iniki dealt the final blow.

We rebuilt an exact replica of the structure, and opened Postcards Café in 1996.

We hope that its history and charm, and a stellar dining  experience, will enhance your enjoyment of beautiful Kauai.
